Chapter 11 - Deja vu

Kenny couldn’t understand the motives of the robbers, but he could feel something was going to happen very soon. He got back home, expecting Angelika to meet him there, but when he switched on the lights, she wasn’t there. He was still expecting her to turn up sometime this evening as he hadn’t seen her for the whole day.
He got himself a drink of water and then went to the living room to watch TV for a bit. Numerous reports were tiring him quickly, but at least they were interesting to write as what was happening was a bit of a riddle for him. Suddenly he heard footsteps, so he momentarily turned around and saw a man there about to strangle him with a wire.
Kenny jumped out of his armchair, just about dodging his death. The guy wore a balaclava and was average built. He saw that his stealthy plan had failed, so he took out a big knife instead and gambled on melee combat. Kenny remembered that he left his gun on a kitchen table, but it would be hard to get to it, so he picked up a lamp. The hitman ran up to him in an attempt to stab him, but Kenny’s reflexes were good and he could also read people quite well after working in police for so long, so he managed to block the attack with the lamp and smacked the guy in the face. The hitman got stunned, so Kenny smacked him with the lamp again.
He then dropped the lamp and ran to the kitchen to get his gun. The hitman got up pretty fast and ran after Kenny to stop him from escaping. Kenny reached to the kitchen table and picked up a gun, but the guy tackled him. Both of them fell on the floor. Kenny quickly elbowed the guy in the eye, before kicking him off himself. He got up instantaneously and pointed his loaded gun at the hitman.
- “Freeze!” he shouted on top of his voice.
The guy stopped his attempt of getting up and remained on the floor.
- “Who are you and why are you trying to kill me?” Kenny asked him full of anger.
The guy didn’t answer. He just remained as he was without even breathing much.
- “I’ve asked you a question!” Kenny brought a gun closer to the guy’s face.
- “Kenny, don’t do it!” Angelika’s voice came.
Kenny looked to his left and saw Angelika in the kitchen. The hitman seemed to have been surprised as well as she turned up very unexpectedly.
- “Why not? He wanted to kill me.” Kenny said defensively.
- “You’re not like that. You’re not a murderer.” Angelika told him.
- “What difference does that make? He’s a scum.” Kenny said.
- “If you kill him – you’ll be taken over by a surge of evil. His death will only be the beginning. You won’t believe that you’ve actually killed a person. Day after day you’ll be waking up with a strong feeling of guilt. The way you perceive things will change forever. You will not be the same Kenny anymore.”
Kenny took a deep breath and then removed the gun from the hitman’s face.
- “I’ve just had a déjà vu.” Kenny said, “Yesterday night we’ve experienced the same thing with the guy killing his friend.”
- “I am very proud of you, Kenny. You did not let evil take you over. It tested you and you have passed.” Angelika said with a smile on her face.
- “What are we going to do with him now?” Kenny asked.
- “Let’s unmask him first.” Angelika said.
She walked up to the hitman and pulled off his balaclava. He seemed to be a guy of similar age to Kenny.
- “OK.” Kenny let Angelika take over.
- “We should take him to the station. I’m sure he was sent by the remaining robber to kill you.”
- “Why does he want to kill me? What did I in particular do?”
- “That I don’t know.” Angelika said.
- “He hates cops.” Hitman suddenly spoke.
- “Yeah, shut up.” Kenny told him.
Kenny then put handcuffs on the guy, and together with Angelika they took him to the station.

Messages from this chapter:

-Guilt can change the way you perceive things
-You have to know the difference between right and wrong. Kenny knew it and so didn’t kill the guy who attempted to kill him. Leash on the other hand didn’t know right from wrong and so killed his best friend.
